Chapter Twelve

“Is Kuya here?”

“I saw him join the call.”

“I don’t see him.”

“He’s in here with the camera off.”

“Where is he?”

“Kuya, come out na.”

Honestly, Victor liked his job, liked making food, liked every single person in that call and not only because they happened to be his brother Richard and his cousins Josh and Lora. But there was always a call, a message, a meeting. Neverending.

Victor was never a peppy work person but he was now very aware of the effort he was going through to show just minimum enthusiasm. He drew in a deep breath before unmuting—but still didn’t turn on video.

“I’m here,” he said. He had his Bluetooth earphones so his phone could remain on the backseat beside him, some distance away, rather than right there in his hand.

“Where are you right now?” Lora, in the Zoom call, asked.

“EDSA.”

“Where in EDSA? You’re still making it to Bel-Air with the cake?” That was Josh.

“The cake” was the mango cream cake inside the insulated box on the passenger seat of his car, beside his driver. Yeah, a driver—this week Victor tried having one of the company drivers take him to all of his appointments. He thought, maybe he’d feel better about his very long days when driving wasn’t part of it. It did give him more energy to include quick visits to Yumi & Kit Cafe in the middle of the week. While that was a win, he also maybe shouldn’t have agreed to take this many calls—that he normally wouldn’t have joined while driving.

Victor sucked in a long breath. “I still need to decorate it. And I’m in…Guadalupe.”

“Are you sure you have time to do that? What else are you doing today?”

Josh seemed concerned and he had a right to be. The cake was for his daughter’s birthday, and she specifically requested the mango cream cake from their company kitchen, but Victor was not going to bring over one straight from the office refrigerator without adding a personal touch. He didn’t have time to do it all day, so after appointments that took him to Makati then San Juan then Ortigas, he swung by the office, and now he was en route with the cake and gum paste in different colors to Yumi & Kit Cafe. Or as his driver started to call it, “kina Ma’am Sabrina.”

“Nothing I need to report in this call,” Victor said. “I’ll make it to Charlotte’s party. With a decorated cake. Don’t worry about it.”

“Excuse me!” Lora was laughing and Victor didn’t have to look at the phone on the seat to know what that probably looked like. “You have plans today, Kuya? That’s none of our business?”

He rolled his eyes. “Richard, this is your meeting. If you don’t need me, I have a cake to decorate.”

“It is my meeting. Now everyone shut up and give me your votes on the purchases I sent to your email.”

Oh right, it was this kind of meeting. Agos Foods was started by Victor’s parents and their siblings, and at this point in time, most of it was run by Victor and his brother and their cousins.
